Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has made it clear that he hopes to stay with the team despite heading into free agency. After making 12 starts, including in the playoffs, Wilson expressed his desire to return to the Steel City.
In a conversation with reporters on Monday, Wilson stated that his plan is to re-sign with the Steelers. “That’s the plan,” he said. “I love it here, and I think we have a great football team.” Wilson’s enthusiasm for the team and the city is evident, and he’s eager to continue being a part of the Steelers’ organization.
Although Wilson hasn’t met with team management yet to discuss a potential contract extension, he’s confident that the team knows how he feels. “I think they’ve known that I’ve always wanted to be here and play here,” he said. “But it is also a process. We haven’t had those meetings yet, so we will have those and we’ll go from there.”
The 36-year-old quarterback had a solid season with the Steelers, despite missing the first six games due to a calf injury. He helped jumpstart the team’s offense, stretching the field vertically and making plays with his arm and legs. However, the team’s season ultimately ended in disappointment, with a blowout postseason loss to rival Baltimore.
Despite the disappointing ending, Wilson was positive about his overall performance. “I thought I played well,” he said. “There’s moments I wish I played a little bit better. I feel like I had two plays that I wish I had back, just to be honest with you.” Wilson acknowledged that there were a few plays that didn’t go as planned, but he’s already looking forward to next season.
As he heads into free agency, Wilson made it clear that he has no intention of retiring. “That’s always been my plan, is to play as long as possible,” he said. “I’ve said that since I was a rookie. That’s always been my kind of thought process.” Wilson’s passion for the game and his commitment to his craft are evident, and he’s eager to continue competing at a high level.
The Steelers’ quarterback situation is uncertain heading into the offseason, with the entire quarterback room – including Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen – set to become free agents. It remains to be seen whether the team will retool or try to bring back one or more of the quarterbacks for the 2025 season. However, one thing is clear: Russell Wilson wants to be back in Pittsburgh, and he’s hoping to make that a reality.
