WR BURST: Texans Cut Ties with Diontae Johnson

The Houston Texans have waived wide receiver Diontae Johnson, the team announced on Tuesday. This move marks the latest development in Johnson’s tumultuous 2024 season.

Johnson began the year with the Carolina Panthers, where he established himself as the team’s top target, catching 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns in seven games. His performance made him an attractive trade target, and he was subsequently dealt to the Baltimore Ravens.

However, Johnson’s tenure with the Ravens was short-lived and tumultuous. He caught just one pass in four games and refused to enter the team’s Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, leading to his suspension and eventual waiver.

The Texans claimed Johnson off waivers in late December, following an injury to wide receiver Tank Dell. Johnson played in two games for the Texans, catching three passes for 24 yards.

Despite his efforts, Johnson’s time with the Texans was brief, and the team parted ways with him on Tuesday. This move comes after the Texans’ playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers, in which Johnson recorded one catch for 12 yards.

At 28 years old, Johnson’s actions have likely diminished his value as a free agent entering the 2025 offseason. It remains to be seen whether he can convince another team to give him an opportunity.

The Texans will now focus on their upcoming Divisional Round matchup against the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.
