Josh McDaniels has had plenty of success calling plays for the New England Patriots over the years. But he’s never done it with a quarterback quite like Drake Maye.
Talking to Patriots.com, head coach Mike Vrabel says he’s long been a fan of McDaniels as a play-caller. On top of that experience, Vrabel says he believes the third-time Patriots offensive coordinator will adjust to the “new trends” that have developed in the NFL over recent years.
There’s been some growth from the offense over the years, and (McDaniels) has blended that with some of the new trends,” Vrabel said to Patriots.com. “But the foundation will remain the same. I’m excited about adding some of those new trends.”
McDaniels is famous for developing quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett in New England. In 2025, he’ll inherit another promising quarterback in Maye.
However, the second-year quarterback has a different skillset than we’ve seen from past Patriots quarterbacks. Players like Brady — and even early Mac Jones — succeeded by running meticulous, crisp offenses. Meanwhile, Maye has flourished when he takes off running and improvises plays.
It’s a different style — one that Vrabel plans to take advantage of
“We’re gonna want to do things that maybe they didn’t do with the previous quarterbacks here,” Vrabel said to Patriots.com. “That was all part of the interview process of what the vision is, things that you’ve liked from your history, things that you’d like to add, and where we could enhance some of that stuff.”
Since hiring Vrabel, the Patriots have come a long way in restructuring the coaching staff and front office. Next, leadership in New England will be tasked with rebuilding the roster.
As Patriots.com noted, that rebuild will be led by three people. The first is Vrabel. The second is returning executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf. The third is VP of player personnel Ryan Cowden, who worked with Vrabel in Tennessee.
