Pittsburgh Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo is heading to his first-ever Pro Bowl—but he’s not exactly bragging about it. After a decade in the league, Seumalo was selected as the third alternate at guard, stepping in after several others opted out.
Rather than celebrating the achievement, Seumalo took a humble and lighthearted approach when asked about his selection.
“I’m really only here because, you know, three or four guys couldn’t be here. So, I mean, it’s still really cool and an honor. But, you know, I guess I’ll take the fourth or fifth place here. I didn’t have really anything else going on. You know, it was snowing in Pittsburgh, so I thought I’d try to get some good weather.”
Despite his modesty, Seumalo played a key role in Pittsburgh’s offensive line this season, helping stabilize the unit. The 31-year-old veteran, a Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles, has come a long way since being drafted out of Oregon State in 2015.
A Well-Earned Recognition?
While some may question whether alternates truly “earn” their Pro Bowl spots, Seumalo’s selection reflects the lack of dominant AFC guards this season. His solid play for the Steelers helped the team remain competitive, proving his value as a steady, reliable lineman.
His journey from a mid-round draft pick to an established starter and now a Pro Bowler highlights his work ethic and durability. Even if he wasn’t a first-choice selection, Seumalo’s career arc shows that hard work and consistency pay off in the long run.
What’s Next for Seumalo and the Steelers?
With free agency approaching, Pittsburgh will have key decisions to make regarding their roster, including the offensive line and quarterback situation. Whether or not Seumalo remains in the Steelers’ future plans, his first Pro Bowl selection adds another milestone to his accomplished career.
For now, he’ll enjoy the warmer weather—and maybe even take a little pride in the recognition, even if it came as an alternate.
