CLEVELAND, Ohio — Myles Garrett requested a trade from the Browns on Monday. If the Browns did decide to grant Garrett his request and trade him, the question then becomes what they should expect to get back in return for the All-Pro defensive end and 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
To get an idea of what a potential package, let’s go back to a fairly recent trade that involved a big-time pass rusher in his prime.
In September of 2018, the Chicago Bears acquired Khalil Mack from the Raiders in a blockbuster trade.
The Bears sent:
first-round picks in 2019 and 2020;
a third in 2020;
and a sixth-rounder in 2019
in exchange for Mack, a second-round pick and a conditional fifth, both in 2020.
The first-round picks the Bears ended up giving for Mack were the 24th pick in 2019, which the Raiders used on running back Josh Jacobs; and the 19th pick in 2020, which became cornerback Damon Arnette.
But the Browns could get even more than that if they chose to trade Garrett. He has been a better player than Mack in his career, and he still has at least a few years of his prime left.
A former fourth overall pick of the Raiders in 2014, Mack had 40.5 sacks, 68 tackles for loss and nine forced fumbles in his four seasons before being traded to Chicago.
In that time with Oakland, Mack won Defensive Player of the Year in 2016, was a two-time first team All-Pro selection and a three-time Pro Bowler.
Mack was 27 years old when he was traded to the Bears.
Garrett will turn 30 on Dec. 29 of this year.
He has a franchise-record 102.5 sacks and 116 tackles for loss in his eight seasons so far with the Browns.
Garrett again is a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year, which will be awarded Thursday night, despite the Browns going 3-14 in 2024. This season he became the first player in NFL history to have at least 14 sacks in four consecutive seasons.
