The club chose not to make any major signings while completing two big sales that improve its position under Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
“Newcastle United have added the potential to invest an extra £100m in the summer transfer window with their late flurry of player exits,” Douglas wrote.
The deals for Lloyd Kelly and Miguel Almirón, which generated nearly £30 million in total, were seen as “pure profit” in PSR terms, according to Douglas.
The decision not to spend this winter was made weeks in advance, Douglas revealed in his report.
“The club coalesced around a decision not to pursue incomings weeks before their inactivity on deadline day,” Douglas wrote. According to the insider, Newcastle officials believed there was little value in the market and preferred to wait for better opportunities in the summer.
Douglas links Newcastle to PSV winger Johan Bakayoko, Bournemouth’s Ilya Zabarnyi, and Southampton prospect Tyler Dibling as potential targets the club will try to sign next summer after not batting an eyelid last month.
“With Newcastle now in the hunt for the top five and a potential Champions League place, a plan A and B are being assembled,” Douglas wrote.
The club’s financial strategy is designed to avoid last-minute sales under PSR pressure, as happened last summer
