Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell continues to add to his revamped coaching staff, bringing in another assistant from the collegiate ranks.

The Lions are expected to hire Iowa State assistant head coach and running backs coach Tyler Roehl as an offensive assistant.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz was the first to report the hire.

Roehl, who has 15 years of coaching experience, spent last season on Matt Campbell’s staff at Iowa State. Before that, he worked at his alma mater North Dakota State for nine seasons as the running backs and tight ends coach.

In 2019, he took on additional duties as the Bison’s offensive coordinator, a role he held until his departure after the 2023 season.

Before joining Iowa State last year, Roehl, 39, initially agreed to become Tennessee State’s associate head coach. However, he reversed course and joined the Cyclones instead.

Roehl began his coaching career in 2010 as a running backs coach at Concordia (Minn.). He then returned to North Dakota State — where he played four season at running back — as a graduate assistant in 2011 before spending time as an assistant at Moorhead High School in Minnesota. His addition to Campbell’s staff in Detroit continues the trend of former NFL players joining the Lions. Roehl spent one season in the league as a running back for the Seattle Seahawks.

A proven winner who could further reinforce Detroit’s “grit” culture and running philosophy under Campbell and running backs coach Scottie Montgomery, Roehl has won seven FCS national championships as an assistant coach.
