Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges’ 2019 run with the Pittsburgh Steelers is still remembered to this day. Going from a rookie minicamp tryout to rookie starter, Hodges caught lightning in the bottle for a short period of time and clawed the Steelers to a 8-8 record that year.
When he started showing some things in training camp, the Steelers began to take notice of Hodges as more than just the fourth quarterback in training camp that season. Hodges recalled the moment he knew he had made it with the Steelers. The previous week, Hodges had tried out with the New York Giants. He knew he was not going to make the team because they had drafted Daniel Jones. Yet, it was Hodges’ confidence that earned him that spot.
“I remember Randy (Fichter) saying, ‘Tell me about Daniel Jones’ I responded, ‘I don’t think he’s $30 million better than me’. And I think right there, Randy knew he had to keep this guy,” Hodges said on Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger.
In 2019, Hodges went 3-3 in six starts while throwing for 1063 yards and five touchdowns to eight interceptions. He played in eight games for the Steelers. Hodges spent 2019 and 2020 with the Steelers before heading to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. He has not played in the NFL since his time with the Rams.
