The Pittsburgh Steelers are working to sign one of Justin Fields or Russell Wilson before free agency, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said. Schefter says the team wants one of the quarterbacks set so they can move on to their other priorities in free agency, and the team plans to do that this week.
“The other place to watch this week is the Pittsburgh Steelers because they currently do not have a quarterback under contract,” Schefter said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “It’s tough to go into free agency to go add to your offense when you have no idea who’s playing quarterback. That’s why I think they’re going to spend this week working on getting a deal done with either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson.”
Sources told PennLive at the NFL Combine that the hold up is Fields’ market, which is set to be strong. At least three other teams are interested in Fields, but the Steelers will have to make it worth his while to sign him this week. If he does not, they could pivot to Wilson.
Wilson, however, has some heat on him inside the organization, sources told PennLive. That is over a report that leaked about tensions between himself and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Pittsburgh hopes to have a deal with one done by next Monday.
