Ben Hall, who played the last two years at running back in Ann Arbor, plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Wednesday, he said on X.com. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Hall met with media just last week where he broke down all the work he put in this offseason to lose weight, studied film of former North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton − the Tar Heels former OC, Chip Lindsey, is now orchestrating the offense in Ann Arbor − and prepare to be a factor in a loaded running back room.

It wasn’t going to be easy, not only did the Wolverines bring back ReliaQuest Bowl MVP Jordan Marshall, but added former Alabama back Justice Haynes, however Hall implied he was up to the task to earn part of the coaches trust.

“I’d say what I lack in experience on the field, I’ve gotten so many great reps in this program,” Hall said. “Just another competitor in the room. Competition brings out the best in you, and I think this is the best I’ve been so far.”

While it’s not clear what changed between then and now, U-M’s backfield depth took a hit without the 5-foot-11, 220-pound back. Buried behind Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards on the depth chart, Hall ran 29 times for just 72 yards last season after rushing 15 times for 69 yards as a true freshman in the maize and blue.

Michigan running back Benjamin Hall (28) runs against Texas linebacker David Gbenda (33) during the second half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

Hall was a three-star recruit per 247sports composite rankings, rated No. 55 among running backs in the Class of 2023, No. 79 among players in the state of Georgia and No. 787 among players regardless of position.

He becomes the third expected Wolverine to enter the transfer portal, following linebacker Jason Hewlett and defensive back Ja’Den McBurrows, both of whom have been said to plan to enter the online database when it opens later this week.

This is the final week of Michigan’s spring practice, which will be capped off with the annual maize vs. blue spring game scrimmage is on Saturday at noon at Michigan Stadium.
