Campbell’s transformation into a defensive leader for the Crimson Tide didn’t happen overnight. There, he made a name for himself as a disruptive edge rusher with the athleticism to dominate.

“This guy is a great person,” Saban said. “People have to understand about Jihaad—he played with his hand in the dirt in high school. Went to IMG, came out as an outside ’backer, moved inside and kept improving. I thought he had a fantastic year.”

Under Saban’s guidance, Campbell made a critical transition from edge rusher to inside linebacker, a move that unlocked a new level of impact for the Alabama defense.

“He’s got tremendous range, speed. Can play inside or outside,” Saban explained. “He never played behind the line before we moved him two years ago because of injuries. But now he’s one of the best inside linebackers we’ve coached. I just love how he developed.”

In his final season in Tuscaloosa, Campbell posted eye-popping numbers: 117 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks across 13 games. His instincts, physicality, and sideline-to-sideline speed helped him earn First-Team All-SEC honors and semifinalist nods for both the Butkus and Bednarik Awards.

Despite undergoing offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum, Campbell’s toughness never wavered—something Saban frequently praised.

“You talk about toughness and leadership—he showed it every day,” said Saban, whose net worth is estimated at $80 million. “He lit up at the Combine and has all the tools to succeed at the next level, but what we’ll remember most here is the heart and effort he gave every Saturday.”
