Shock Move: Indiana Fever Cut Elite Defender Bree Hall—Dawn Staley Won’t Be Happy
Despite being called one of the best defenders in her 25-year coaching career by Dawn Staley, Bree Hall has been released by the Indiana Fever ahead of the season opener. The move, driven by a crowded roster and offensive depth needs, has fans and insiders stunned. Could another team scoop up the defensive standout? Full story inside.
The Indiana Fever have already played two of their three preseason matchups to begin the year. With their May 17 season opener against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky coming up quickly, the Fever are making their final roster decisions.
On Monday, Indiana decided to release 2025 second-round pick Bree Hall. The move come as a bit of a surprise, but it certainly will not make one legendary college head coach happy.
Hall played for Dawn Staley with the South Carolina Gamecocks. Staley has been very vocal about her love for Hall and what she does on the basketball court.
Not long ago, Staley opened up about Hall and has some major praise to shower her with.
“Bree’s an elite defender,” she said. “It’s elite – the things that she does, the people that she has to guard. In my 25 years of coaching, she’s on my all-time defensive team – all the players that I’ve coached – because she’s very consistent with it, and she relishes the challenge.”
Despite her defensive ability, Hall will be looking to land with a new team for the 2025 WNBA season.
Throughout her four years at South Carolina, Hall didnot put up gaudy numbers. In her senior season, Hall averaged 6.3 points, three rebounds, and an assist per game.
Her defense is what has made her so valuable throughout her career.
At this point in time, Hall’s next career move is unknown. She is very likely to be signed by another team at some point.
In the 2025 WNBA draft, Hall was drafted by Indiana with the No. 20 overall pick. Whoever is interested will be sure to get a vouch from Staley.
