Recruiting War Escalates: Auburn and Alabama Battle for Nation’s Top Running Back

The heated rivalry between Alabama and Auburn has taken a new turn—this time, on the recruiting trail. Both programs are locked in a fierce battle for five-star running back Jaylen Matthews, the No. 1 back in the nation and a game-changer on and off the field.

Matthews, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound speedster out of Buford High School in Georgia, has been the center of national attention since his breakout junior season. With offers from over 30 Division I programs, his list has narrowed to just two: the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers.

Alabama has long been known as “Running Back U,” producing NFL stars like Derrick Henry, Najee Harris, and Josh Jacobs. Now under the leadership of new head coach Kalen DeBoer, the Tide are reloading with a modern, fast-paced offense that made waves during DeBoer’s time at Washington. Matthews is their top target—and Alabama is going all in.

But Auburn isn’t backing down. Under second-year head coach Hugh Freeze, the Tigers are building a new identity—one centered around explosive playmakers like Matthews. Auburn has pitched a “day one impact” opportunity and a spread offense that puts running backs in the spotlight.

What’s made the battle even more intense is Matthews’ own public comments. In a recent interview, he said, “Alabama is tradition, but Auburn feels like home.” That quote has set social media on fire, with fans from both sides dissecting every word, tweet, and visit photo.

Recruiting analysts are split on where Matthews will land. Some believe Alabama’s NFL pipeline and DeBoer’s innovative schemes give them the edge. Others point to Auburn’s aggressive NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) packages and closer relationships with Matthews’ family as key factors.

Adding more drama, Matthews is set to make an official visit to both schools just weeks apart. His trip to Auburn is scheduled during their massive summer BBQ recruiting event, while Alabama is preparing a private weekend visit that includes a tour of their new football facilities and one-on-one time with DeBoer and his offensive staff.

“This is more than a recruiting battle—it’s a recruiting war,” said ESPN recruiting insider Brian Evans. “Both schools know that landing a player like Jaylen Matthews could shift momentum for the next 2-3 seasons.”

The Iron Bowl has always been intense on the field, but this offseason battle is proving that the rivalry never sleeps. With fans glued to recruiting updates and message boards lighting up daily, every move Matthews makes is being watched closely.

Jaylen Matthews plans to announce his commitment in early August, likely via a live broadcast on national television. Until then, Alabama and Auburn will keep throwing everything they have into landing the superstar back.

One thing is certain—whichever school wins Matthews’ signature won’t just gain a future star. They’ll also gain a major victory in one of college football’s most passionate and unforgiving rivalries
