A decision has been made as to whether further action should be taken.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be punished for preventing Manchester City fans from celebrating his goal during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

In the 80th minute, Alexander-Arnold scored the equalizer to give Liverpool a point. He decided to celebrate his crucial goal by running towards the corner flag, putting his finger to his lips and making a quiet gesture to the angry home fans.

Such conduct would normally be punished with a yellow card, but Alexander-Arnold went off without warning at this point and appears to have been spared retroactive disciplinary action.

A number of subsequent reports suggested that no further action would be taken and that the incident would not be investigated by the FA. The celebration was a conscious move by Alexander-Arnold, who later said: “It’s always nice to celebrate [with the fans]. “It’s fun to see all the faces,” he said.

Liverpool spokesman Virgil van Dijk described Alexander-Arnold as “the complete package” after the game, prompting City midfielder Bernardo Silva to label Liverpool “back”.

“He offers a lot defensively and of course in possession. He has very special qualities and it shows, so he has the full package,” Van Dijk told reporters at the Etihad Stadium.

“He’s got to do what he’s doing, he’s got to improve and maintain the high standards we have for him and for him.”Liverpool are just a third behind City in the 2023/24 Premier League, with current leaders Arsenal a point clear.

But in the short term, the focus will shift from domestic football to the Europa League this week. Jurgen Klopp’s side face Austrian side LASK on Thursday and need a win to guarantee their place in the knockout rounds.
