Crimson Alabama

The time Alabama went 72 yards to stun one of its biggest rivals, key national title run

The Alabama Crimson Tide’s rich football history is filled with iconic moments, legendary players, and unforgettable games. One such moment was the 2012 matchup against LSU, where the Crimson Tide executed a flawless five-play, 72-yard drive that sealed their 21-17 victory. This drive showcased the team’s confidence and cohesion, with quarterback AJ McCarron praising his teammates’ ability to perform under pressure: “It was like clockwork… We do this every Thursday (in practice), so what’s the difference here?”

The final drive began with McCarron hitting Kevin Norwood for 18 yards to the Alabama 46. The two hooked up again on the next two plays, for 15 yards to the LSU 39 and then 11 yards to the LSU 28. McCarron then threw incomplete deep to Norwood, stopping the clock with 51 seconds left. On the next play, McCarron dropped straight back and found T.J. Yeldon, who had let blitzing cornerback Jalen Mills slip past him as he drifted into the right flat. McCarron dumped the ball right over Mills’ head into Yeldon’s waiting arms, who caught it at the 33 and turned upfield with several blockers in front of him. Yeldon evaded diving LSU linebacker Kevin Minter at the 27 and then juked safety Craig Loston off his feet at the 15, scoring the game-winning touchdown.

This victory over LSU was a pivotal moment in Alabama’s championship season. The team went on to edge Georgia 32-28 in the SEC championship game and then dominate Notre Dame 42-14 in the BCS national championship game. The Crimson Tide’s second straight title and third in four years was a testament to their dominance in college football.
