Liverpool analysis – Harvey Elliott asks Dominik Szoboszlai question as defender sparks concern

The Frenchman’s starts have been an indicator of how far he is from Joel Matip and there is a rustiness to his game that Red are still struggling to overcome after several injury absences this season.

Alexis McAllister and Dominik Szoboslai have secured two of the three spots, while Curtis Jones is still in third with Cup action behind the likes of Harvey Elliott, Ryan Gravenbirch and Wataru Endo.

Gravenbirch’s action-oriented style and willingness to get his feet forward means he always commands attention and, as he showed against Manchester City last weekend, he is keen for that role.

But while the Dutchman enjoyed his time here, it was Elliott who impressed the most. His busy form has once again highlighted why he has been a consistent influence both on the bench and in every Europa League game this season. Season, as a starter.

The 20-year-old could do little to drive home his claim to start his second Premier League season against Fulham on Sunday, with Szoboslai’s form on the right side of the engine room slipping in recent games.

Endo, meanwhile, will benefit from his fourth full 90 minutes for Liverpool and move into sixth in the match. Mac Allister clearly needed some rest after admitting to falling asleep during a team meeting before the City game.

Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match call for what would be a famous night in Europe was always one of his most ambitious statements as Liverpool manager.

But Anfield failed to encourage a bitterly cold evening and although the honor of loudest fans went to the away supporters, it remained a challenge for the visitors.
