Maliq Brown is a huge fan of Jon Scheyer’s coaching. The Duke Blue Devils forward shared his thoughts on Scheyer’s leadership qualities on Wednesday’s episode of “The Brotherhood Podcast,” hosted by teammate Caleb Foster.
Foster asked for Brown’s opinion on Scheyer and the team culture he has nurtured at Duke. The incoming senior praised the Duke coach for the way he treated the players on and off the court.
“From day one, when he started recruiting me, just you know he’s been the same,” Brown said (timestamp 9:42). “He encourages everybody on the court, even to the walk-ons. I mean he motivates everybody – weight room, on the court, off the court. A guy you definitely want to have in your corner.”
Brown added that Scheyer offers a unique perspective to the Duke players, as he also played for the Blue Devils from 2006 to 2010.
“Just teaching the ropes, how college basketball is and just being a Duke basketball player is something,” he said.
Foster followed up Brown’s answer by noting that Scheyer knows everything the players are going through. He added that it’s a blessing to have a coach like him who has previous experience.
Scheyer played four seasons at Duke from 2006 to 2010. He was part of the Duke team that won the national championship in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. He played an important role in Duke’s title run, averaging 18.2 points, 4.9 dimes, 3.6 boards, and 1.6 steals through 40 games in his senior year.
How Maliq Brown Performed Under Jon Scheyer at Duke in the 2024-25 NCAA Season
Maliq Brown transferred to Duke ahead of the 2024-25 campaign after spending two seasons at the Syracuse Orange. He played 26 games for the Blue Devils in his junior year, averaging 2.5 points, 3.7 boards, and 1.5 dimes. He also displayed his defensive prowess in his first season at Duke, averaging 1.3 steals per contest.
Brown made three appearances for Duke in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. His first March Madness game for the Blue Devils came in the Sweet 16 against Arizona, playing four minutes in Duke’s 100-93 win. He recorded one assist, one rebound, and one steal in that contest.
Brown followed that up with a three-minute appearance in Duke’s win over Alabama in the Elite Eight. His playing time increased in the Final Four game against Houston, logging 15 minutes in Duke’s 70-67 loss. He had four points, three assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
