A new day is dawning in Chapel Hill — and it’s being guided by two high-profile minds with elite pedigrees. The University of North Carolina has appointed Michael Lombardi and Jim Tanner as general managers of its football and men’s basketball programs, signaling a dramatic shift in how the Tar Heels plan to build rosters and chase championships. With legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick leading the football side and Hubert Davis steering the basketball ship, this infusion of front-office brilliance could mark the beginning of a powerhouse transformation in both sports.

In football, Michael Lombardi brings a wealth of NFL experience to the table. Having spent over 30 years navigating pro football alongside the likes of Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick, Lombardi now reunites with Belichick to construct a Tar Heel roster capable of dominating in the ACC and beyond. Coming off a disappointing season plagued by injuries under Mack Brown’s second tenure, UNC football is hungry for a rebuild — and Lombardi has the blueprint.

“Working with Coach Belichick has always been one of the most rewarding times of my life,” Lombardi said. “Reuniting here at UNC is a dream come true. Chapel Hill is a magical place… I’m thankful to the university for this opportunity to restore greatness to UNC football.”

On the hardwood, Jim Tanner steps into uncharted territory as the program’s first-ever basketball general manager. A UNC alum and the founder of Tandem Sports + Entertainment, Tanner’s expertise in athlete representation and talent development makes him a game-changer in this NIL-and-transfer-portal era. In partnership with Hubert Davis, he orchestrated an offseason overhaul, landing high-impact transfers including Jonathan Powell (West Virginia), Henri Veesaar (Arizona), Jarin Stevenson (Alabama), Kyan Evans (Colorado State), Jaydon Young (Virginia Tech), and Luka Bogavac from Europe.

“Both of my kids and I went to Carolina, and we owe so much to this university,” said Tanner. “The landscape of college basketball has changed dramatically… I look forward to using my 28 years of experience to help position UNC as strategic, adaptive, and innovative — all while staying true to the core values of Carolina Basketball.”
