Duke head coach Jon Scheyer has opened up about the evolving connection between him and sophomore guard Caleb Foster. After a rollercoaster freshman season filled with high expectations, frustrating injuries, and inconsistent minutes, Foster’s growth and the strength of his bond with Scheyer have become a story of resilience and trust.
In an interview with local media, Scheyer didn’t sugarcoat the challenges. “It wasn’t an easy year. For either of us,” he said. “But because of that, we’re stronger. We’ve built something deeper than just player and coach.”
Foster entered last season as one of Duke’s most anticipated prospects. His early performances were promising, but a midseason foot injury slowed his momentum. Scheyer’s rotations shifted frequently, and Foster at times found himself watching from the bench rather than leading on the floor.
Still, Foster never wavered in his commitment. “He showed maturity beyond his years,” said Scheyer. “He kept working. He kept listening. He never pointed fingers.”
That persistence paid off. By season’s end, Foster had earned back trust and minutes, finishing strong with multiple double-digit performances. But what mattered most, according to Scheyer, was the dialogue behind the scenes.
“We talked. A lot. It wasn’t just about basketball. It was about understanding each other, figuring out how we win together,” he added.
With Duke aiming to bounce back in 2025-26, Foster is expected to take on a much bigger leadership role. He’s now fully healthy, more vocal, and determined to elevate the program. Scheyer believes Foster’s tough freshman year has shaped him into a more complete player—and a more grounded person.
“I love where he’s at right now,” Scheyer said. “We’ve come through something together, and it made us better.”
