New Head Coach Role for Alabama Great: Erwin Dudley Named Special Assistant by Nate Oats

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Alabama men’s basketball program is bringing one of its all-star alumni back into a vital leadership role. Head coach Nate Oats on Tuesday announced that Erwin Dudley has been elevated to the position of Special Assistant to the Head Coach, a promotion that underscores both Dudley’s incredible legacy at Alabama and his growing impact behind the scenes.

Dudley, who starred for the Crimson Tide during the 2000–03 seasons, comes with an ACME résumé: 2002 SEC Player of the Year, AP Third‑Team All‑America honors, and recognition as an SEC Basketball Legend in 2019. He remains one of Alabama’s most prolific rebounders (1,184 boards, fourth all‑time) and scorers (1,775 career points, ninth in program history) .

For the past two seasons, Dudley has served as a graduate assistant within Oats’ program, contributing significantly to what has become a historic stretch for Alabama basketball. In that span, the Crimson Tide not only collected a combined 53 wins but also reached back-to-back NCAA Elite Eights and achieved the program’s very first Final Four appearance in 2024

> “Erwin’s name is synonymous with the history of Alabama basketball … he possesses a servant’s heart … a great resource for our current players. He will thrive in this role …”

The decision reflects a broader trend in Oats’ staff-building philosophy, which values both fresh perspectives and institutional continuity. As Alabama continues to evolve into a national powerhouse—with multiple NBA draft picks, SEC trophies, and deep March runs—Dudley offers a living bridge between the program’s celebrated past and its ambitious future.

During Dudley’s tenure as a graduate assistant, Oats’ staff claimed 53 wins over two seasons, highlighted by consecutive trips to the Elite Eight and the program’s first-ever Final Four berth in 2024. Alabama was also the only school to reach the Elite Eight in back-to-back seasons during that stretch .
