In a move that electrifies Alabama basketball fans and honors the program’s proud legacy, head coach Nate Oats has officially appointed Crimson Tide legend Erwin Dudley as Special Assistant to the Head Coach. The announcement sends a clear message: Alabama is blending its championship future with its celebrated past — and doing it with purpose.
Dudley, one of the most decorated players in program history, left an indelible mark on the court from 2000 to 2003. A former SEC Player of the Year, All-American, and 2019 SEC Basketball Legend, Dudley racked up 1,775 career points and 1,184 rebounds — still ranking among Alabama’s all-time great
“Erwin’s name is legendary here,” said Coach Oats. “He’s not only a part of Alabama history — he’s a man of character, leadership, and experience. Having him on staff will only elevate our program.”
The promotion follows two highly successful seasons where Dudley served as a graduate assistant under Oats. During that time, Alabama made history — notching 53 wins, reaching back-to-back Elite Eights, and breaking through to the Final Four for the first time ever in 2024.
Dudley’s leadership off the court was as impactful as his dominance on it.
“I’m truly honored to continue my coaching journey with the Crimson Tide,” Dudley said. “Alabama gave me so much as a player — now I get to give back to the next generation. I’m all in.”
As Special Assistant, Dudley will play a key role in player development, mentoring, and program operations — offering insight from a champion’s perspective. His deep connection to Alabama’s culture and his understanding of Oats’ fast-paced, modern system make him a rare asset.
This strategic hire joins a reloaded coaching staff that includes former NBA assistant Chris Fleming, Preston Murphy, and Brian Adams — forming one of the most dynamic benches in college basketball.
The message is loud and clear: Alabama basketball is building a dynasty — and it’s doing it the Bama way: by blending elite coaching, top-tier talent, and a legacy of greatness.
