Duke Football Preseason Poll Snub Could Backfire on AP Voters

AP Poll Voters Will Regret Slotting This ACC Squad Over Duke Football

When the 2025 preseason AP Poll dropped, Duke football found itself just outside the Top 25, while a familiar ACC rival grabbed a spot ahead of them. The decision raised eyebrows in Durham — and could be the kind of miscalculation that haunts AP voters by season’s end.

The team in question? NC State. Riding the wave of an impressive bowl win last year and a returning veteran quarterback, the Wolfpack earned a No. 23 preseason ranking. On paper, their stability and experience justified the nod. But Duke supporters saw the move as a slight, especially considering the Blue Devils’ strong finish in 2024 and key offseason additions under head coach Manny Diaz.

Early-season results have started to validate Duke’s frustration. While the Wolfpack stumbled out of the gate against a ranked non-conference opponent, Duke came within a touchdown of upsetting a Top 10 SEC power. The Blue Devils’ defense, anchored by All-ACC linebacker recruit transfers, looked sharper and more disciplined than last year’s unit.

Beyond the on-field performance, schedule strength is another reason voters may regret their choice. Duke’s 2025 slate features a gauntlet of ranked opponents, offering multiple chances to notch statement wins. NC State’s schedule, while still competitive, lacks the same number of marquee matchups that could boost their poll credibility.

There’s also the matter of coaching momentum. Diaz’s first full recruiting class has brought an energy to the program not seen in years, blending proven starters with emerging talent. Meanwhile, NC State faces questions about depth, especially in the secondary, which could be exposed in conference play.

Duke capitalizes on their opportunities — particularly in high-profile ACC games — they could find themselves not just in the Top 25, but challenging for a top-tier bowl bid. By contrast, NC State’s ranking could slip if early inconsistencies persist.

The preseason poll is never perfect; it’s a blend of projection, reputation, and last year’s results. But for Duke, being overlooked may serve as fuel. The Blue Devils have a chance to prove that they belonged in the conversation from the start, and that their ACC rival’s early nod was premature.

Come November, AP voters might be wishing they’d trusted the rising program in Durham instead.
