Kentucky basketball eyes a four-star point guard out of Texas

The Summer hoops scene is in the rearview and all eyes are now on the rising stars making waves, especially in Texas, and specifically Reese Alston. The 6-foot-4 point guard has been lighting up the courts with his incredible skills, eventually leading to a Puma Pro 16 title while averaging a team-high 14.9 points with Cooz Elite. With Alston already ranked as the No. 9 point guard and No. 4 athlete in the Lone Star State for the class of 2027, the question looms large: can Kentucky basketball, under the leadership of Mark Pope, tap into that coveted Texas recruiting pipeline?

The Second Coming: Reese “LilSkip” Alston

It’s no secret that talent runs deep in Texas, and Reese Alston is proof of that notion. He has quickly ascended to a four-star prospect and ranks as the No. 30 player overall, regardless of position—a testament to his exceptional skill set and hard work on the hardwood. But it’s not just Alston’s impressive stats that turn heads; it’s also his lineage. As the son of streetball legend Rafer “Skip to my Lou” Alston, Reese seems destined for greatness.

With Rafer Alston being an influential figure within Houston’s basketball scene—both as a former Rocket and now as a high school and AAU coach—the Cougars will surely use every advantage at their disposal to keep Reese local.

Hook ‘Em: Texas Longhorns

Another strong contender comes from Austin—the Texas Longhorns led by Sean Miller. The Horns have made a compelling case for why staying in-state could benefit Alston immensely. From cutting-edge facilities to an SEC environment brimming with talent and potential, Texas has crafted an appealing narrative for elite prospects like him.
