Klopp’s comments about Manchester City appear to have angered Pep Guardiola. The Reds manager said Liverpool will not be able to compete financially with state clubs such as City because they do not have a “ceiling”.
However, after 15 games, Liverpool are top of the Premier League, while the Citizens are in fourth place after a poor run of results. The Sky Blues led the group with an unusual four game winless run from November to early December.
Guardiola’s men suffered their second defeat of the season at Aston Villa last week after drawing with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. The Premier League side snapped a run of unwanted wins with a 2-1 win over Luton Town but remain four points clear of top spot. Ahead of City’s trip to Kenilworth Road, Guardiola ordered Liverpool and Arsenal to run the odd, closed attack. “If we don’t win the Premier League, the only team that will fail is us,” Guardiola said. “The city has to win. It’s not fair. “It’s hard to keep doing it week after week, every three days, year after year.”
