Caleb Wilson Joins Elite UNC Company: First Tar Heel Freshman Since Cole Anthony to Earn ACC Player of the Week, Becoming the Eighth Freshman in Program History to Claim the Honor

Caleb Wilson Takes Center Stage: UNC’s Rising Freshman Phenom Powers Tar Heels Into Friday Night Clash With NC Central”

The North Carolina Tar Heels are back under the bright lights of the Dean E. Smith Center tonight as they prepare to host NC Central at 9 p.m., and all eyes are on one name that continues to electrify Chapel Hill — freshman sensation Caleb Wilson. With national accolades pouring in and historic performances stacking up, Wilson has quickly become one of the biggest early-season stories in college basketball.

UNC enters the matchup at 3-0 after an impressive 89–74 win over Radford, a game that showcased both depth and star power. Wilson delivered his first college double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, the highest rebounding total by any Tar Heel this season. His dominance on the glass and poise on both ends of the floor continue to elevate Carolina’s ceiling.

The Tar Heels’ offensive attack remains balanced, with Luka Bogavac leading the Radford victory with 19 points and five assists, Henri Veesaar adding 18, and Jarin Stevenson contributing 15. Yet Wilson’s all-around impact — energy, rebounding, efficiency, and defensive presence — added another layer to UNC’s winning formula.

Wilson has quickly earned national recognition, being named the USBWA National Player of the Week for the period of November 3–9. He also swept ACC honors as the Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, sharing the awards with Virginia Tech’s Neoklis Avdalas. His historic start makes him the first Tar Heel freshman to earn ACC Player-of-the-Week honors since Cole Anthony in the 2019–20 season.

His accomplishment places him among elite company, joining legendary UNC freshmen such as Jerry Stackhouse, Antawn Jamison, Rashad McCants, Tyler Hansbrough, Brandan Wright, Coby White, and Anthony. For a player just three games into his college career, Wilson’s trajectory has sparked excitement and high expectations across Tar Heel Nation.

Tonight’s game against NC Central marks the fourth of five consecutive home contests for the Tar Heels — their longest season-opening home stretch since 1918–19. UNC has made the most of the Smith Center advantage so far, building rhythm, chemistry, and confidence on their home floor.

The Tar Heels will once again be without senior captain Seth Trimble, who suffered a broken bone in his left forearm on November 9. Trimble, responsible for 94.5% of UNC’s returning scoring from last season, had been averaging 14.5 points before the injury. His leadership absence continues to be felt, but Wilson and the rest of UNC’s young core have stepped up.

NC Central enters the game at 1-3, coming off a 77–61 win over Bluefield State. Prior to that victory, the Eagles suffered road losses to NC State, Virginia, and Appalachian State. Facing a surging UNC squad in a packed Smith Center presents a new level of challenge.

Historically, Carolina has dominated this matchup. The Tar Heels hold a 3-0 all-time record against NC Central, with the most recent meeting coming in 2020 — a tight 73–67 UNC win during the COVID-restricted season led by an Armando Bacot double-double. The Eagles showed fight then, and Carolina expects another competitive effort tonight.

UNC has also surged in the national spotlight, climbing seven spots to No. 18 in this week’s AP poll — the Tar Heels’ biggest Week-1 jump since the AP expanded to ranking 25 teams in 1989. With Wilson’s star rising and the team’s chemistry strengthening, fans sense something special beginning to form in Chapel Hill.

As the Tar Heels take the floor tonight, the storyline is clear: Caleb Wilson isn’t just living up to the hype — he’s redefining it. And with each game, UNC’s newest star continues to shine brighter, carrying the Tar Heels toward another statement performance in front of their home crowd.
