SEVEN EJECTED IN FIERY MELEE AS DEPLETED WEST VIRGINIA STUNS NO. 15 DUKE IN A THRILLING COMEBACK WIN West Virginia’s women’s basketball team proved that resilience, heart, and belief can outweigh numbers in one of the wildest finishes college basketball has seen in years.

West Virginia’s women’s basketball team proved that resilience, heart, and belief can outweigh numbers in one of the wildest finishes college basketball has seen in years. What began as a tense defensive battle erupted into chaos at halftime, leaving the Mountaineers with barely enough players to continue. Yet, against every expectation and with only five players available for the entire second half, West Virginia engineered a gritty, emotional, and unforgettable 57-49 upset of No. 15 Duke at The Greenbrier Tip-Off.

The game’s turning point came just as the buzzer sounded to end the first half. Duke held a narrow 23–20 lead when Jordan Wood emphatically blocked a 3-point attempt by West Virginia’s Jordan Harrison. Wood celebrated the play with a flash of bravado, flexing and exchanging words with Harrison. The moment escalated quickly. Harrison, reacting to the taunt, shoved Wood. A Duke teammate rushed over, leading to a brief but heated exchange that drew in multiple players from both teams.

Though the scuffle lasted only a few seconds, its consequences were massive. Harrison and Wood were immediately ejected for their roles in sparking the confrontation. But the real damage came when five West Virginia players — Gia Cooke, Jordan Thomas, Madison Parrish, Kierra Wheeler, and Carter McCray — instinctively stepped off the bench area during the confrontation. NCAA rules mandate automatic ejections for players who leave the bench during an on-court altercation, even if they never participate physically. That technicality cost West Virginia four starters and left the team with only five available athletes for the entire second half.

A situation like that would rattle even the most experienced teams. But instead of folding, the Mountaineers regrouped, refocused, and came out of halftime playing with sharper energy and a unified purpose. Head coach Mark Kellogg called the contest “the craziest game I’ve ever been a part of in my coaching career,” but he also praised the fire his team showed when its back was against the wall.

The remaining five players rose to the occasion with remarkable poise. With no substitutions possible and every whistle potentially devastating, they tightened their defense, controlled the pace, and dug deep for every rebound and loose ball. As fatigue set in, West Virginia relied on heart, discipline, and fierce determination to turn the momentum in its favor. They outscored Duke 37–26 in the second half, wearing down a deeper, more rested Blue Devils squad that suddenly looked shaken by the Mountaineers’ refusal to quit.

Every possession became a test of endurance. Every defensive stand brought the bench — now made up entirely of staff members — to its feet. And with each made shot, the belief seemed to grow stronger. West Virginia thrived in the chaos, showing a level of togetherness and competitive fire that transformed an impossible situation into a defining moment for the program.

After the game, Kellogg acknowledged the gravity of the first-half incident and emphasized that his team would learn from it. “I think we’re better than that,” he said. “And I think we’re going to learn a valuable lesson from that experience and the way that went down.” But he also recognized the extraordinary resilience his players displayed once the dust settled.

What could have been an unraveling instead became a rallying point — a moment where the Mountaineers showed who they were when everything was stripped away. This wasn’t just a win on the scoreboard; it was a testament to toughness, chemistry, and competitive spirit. The game will be remembered not only for the chaos of the ejections, but for the inspiring way West Virginia answered adversity, turning what should have been a crippling blow into one of the program’s most memorable victories.

For a team now sitting at 4–0, the win sends a powerful message: even when outnumbered, underestimated, and under pressure, the Mountaineers are a force capable of rising above the moment. And on this unforgettable night, five players proved that heart can be the greatest advantage of all.
