UNC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FEASTS IN CANCUN WITH A BLACK-FRIDAY ROUT

The North Carolina Tar Heels didn’t just enjoy Thanksgiving dinner—they came back for seconds, thirds, and maybe even dessert. Less than 24 hours after handling South Dakota State on Thanksgiving Day, Courtney Banghart’s squad walked back onto the floor in Cancun on Friday morning and delivered another dominant performance, this time dismantling Kansas State in a statement victory that showcased confidence, chemistry, and a whole lot of firepower.

Kansas State may have landed the first punch with a quick 5–0 start, but from that moment on, the Tar Heels took complete control. North Carolina settled into their offensive rhythm with poise, weathered the early burst, and then launched a scoring avalanche that Kansas State simply couldn’t contain. What followed was a performance that felt less like a competitive contest and more like a continuation of the feast UNC began the day prior.

The Tar Heels shot an extraordinary 55% from the field and an even more impressive 54% from beyond the arc, stretching the floor, sharing the basketball, and converting high-quality looks with ease. Their impressive efficiency was made possible by a balanced offensive attack that featured four double-digit scorers, each contributing in timely and impactful ways. It was the kind of outing that showcased the depth, skill, and momentum UNC has been building early in the season.

For a split second, Kansas State looked ready to challenge the Tar Heels. The Wildcats’ quick 5–0 start had UNC on its heels—briefly. But the seasoned and composed Carolina squad didn’t stay rattled for long. Once they shook off the early rust, they stormed back to dominate the remainder of the first quarter, outscoring Kansas State 22–10 to seize a lead they would never surrender.

Elina Aarnisalo, Nyla Harris, Indya Nivar, and Lanie Grant all made their presence felt early, igniting an offensive spark that fueled the Tar Heels’ turnaround. Their ability to settle the team, move the ball with purpose, and attack mismatches allowed UNC to dictate the pace and style of play from that point forward. Once the Tar Heels’ offense found its groove, the Wildcats had no answer. UNC’s defense tightened, their transition game opened up, and Kansas State spent the rest of the game trying—and failing—to keep up.
