Former UNC basketball sharpshooter thriving in NBA G League

The 2023-24 UNC basketball team is one of the program’s best teams to never win a championship. Complete with an experienced, talented roster that showcased immense chemistry, how the season ended was a disappointment. You might recognize a few names on this roster: RJ Davis, Armando Bacot and Harrison Ingram. All three dabbled with the NBA. Davis and Ingram are currently in the G League, while Bacot is playing overseas.

The best pure shooter on that 2023-24 North Carolina roster, though, is Cormac Ryan. Transferring in from Notre Dame during the prior offseason, Ryan finished his lone season in Carolina Blue second in 3-point percentage (.354) and free throw percentage (.874).

Now a member of the G-League’s Wisconsin Herd, who are affiliated with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, Ryan is thriving in his second pro season.

Ryan is averaging 21.4 points per game on 50% field goal shooting, a 42% mark from deep and 90% mark from the free throw line. The Herd are just 6-8 as of Saturday morning, but they have a true leader in Ryan. Question is: when will Milwaukee call Ryan up to make his NBA regular season debut?

It’s no secret the 2025-26 Tar Heels could use Ryan’s shooting prowess on their roster, particularly from the free throw line. UNC has its best frontcourt in years, led by Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar, but backcourt production is still coming into its own. That 2023-24 North Carolina squad lost to Alabama in a heartbreaking, Sweet 16 result. Can the current Tar Heels make it a few steps deeper and bring a National Championship back to Chapel Hill?
