How Henri Veesaar’s Return Makes Life Easier for UNC

The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball got a big boost back in their lineup this weekend, as Henri Veesaar made his return from injury after missing the team’s last two games.

Veesaar had been sidelined with a lower-body injury, forcing him to miss matchups against Pitt and NC State. The Tar Heels managed to handle Pitt without him, but his absence was glaring in the lopsided loss to NC State, where UNC struggled to control the paint on both ends of the floor.

UNC has also been without star freshman Caleb Wilson, who fractured his hand during the loss to Miami on Feb. 10. With Wilson still recovering, Veesaar’s return couldn’t have come at a better time.

A true two-way big, Veesaar immediately stabilizes UNC’s rotation. He provides a reliable interior scoring option, stretches the floor with his perimeter shooting, and anchors the defense with his size and timing. On the season, he’s averaging over 16 points and nine rebounds per game while shooting efficiently from both the field and beyond the arc. His breakout campaign in Chapel Hill has even pushed him onto multiple mock draft boards as a potential first-round selection in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Immediate Impact Against Syracuse Orange men’s basketball

In his return, Veesaar wasted no time making his presence felt in UNC’s 77-64 win over Syracuse. He poured in 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting, adding three rebounds and three blocks. More importantly, he restored balance to UNC’s offense.

With Veesaar drawing double teams in the post and commanding attention at the perimeter, the Tar Heels’ guards found cleaner driving lanes and more open looks from three. His ability to operate in pick-and-pop situations also forced Syracuse to defend further from the rim, creating space that had been missing in recent outings.

After the game, Veesaar admitted there was a brief adjustment period.

“I feel like, after the first 10 minutes, I kind of got back into the rhythm,” he said. “I just got used to playing.”

That rhythm could be critical as UNC approaches the final stretch of the regular season.

Hubert Davis on the Difference

Head coach Hubert Davis emphasized just how much easier life becomes for his team when Veesaar is on the floor.

“It’s easier because he’s a guy who can consistently score in the paint,” Davis said. “He can shoot from three, he can pass, and there’s a lot of attention on him. When he’s in the game, defenses are geared to either stop him or make it difficult for him. From a defensive standpoint, not even necessarily blocking shots, but just his size and being able to alter shots, it’s huge.”

Davis also noted that Veesaar repeatedly assured the staff he felt healthy and confident during the game — an encouraging sign as UNC looks to build momentum.

What It Means Moving Forward

Veesaar’s return does more than add points to the box score — it reestablishes UNC’s identity. The Tar Heels are at their best when they can play inside-out, protect the rim, and control the glass. Veesaar checks all those boxes.

Until Wilson returns, Veesaar will likely shoulder even more responsibility offensively. If he continues playing at this level, UNC not only stays afloat but potentially regains the form that once made it one of the more dangerous teams in the country.

The goal now is simple: survive the regular season stretch, regain full health, and peak at the right time. If Veesaar’s first game back is any indication, the Tar Heels just got the spark they desperately needed.
