Versatile Oklahoma Defensive Lineman Schedules Official Visit With Kansas State

Kansas State’s push for Dawayne Jones is about more than just adding another name to the 2027 class – it’s about landing a potential tone-setter in the trenches.

The 6-foot-3, 265-pound standout from Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa has quickly become one of the most sought-after defensive linemen in the region. According to 247Sports, Jones is currently ranked as the No. 32 defensive lineman nationally and the No. 7 overall prospect in Oklahoma for the 2027 cycle — numbers that reflect both his production and long-term upside.

A Perfect Scheme Fit?

Under first-year head coach Collin Klein, Kansas State is looking to build a roster that can dominate at the line of scrimmage. While Klein made his name on the offensive side of the ball, the Wildcats’ staff has emphasized physicality and versatility across the board — traits that define Jones’ game.

Jones has the ability to line up at multiple spots along the defensive front. He can play as a traditional defensive tackle in even fronts, slide outside in odd packages, or serve as a disruptive interior pass rusher on obvious passing downs. His quick first step allows him to penetrate gaps before offensive linemen can anchor, and his hand usage has noticeably improved over the past year.

Recruiting analysts point to his balance and leverage as advanced traits for a player entering his senior season. He consistently wins with pad level, and his motor doesn’t fade late in games — something college staffs covet when projecting long-term development.

Relationships Matter

Kansas State’s position in this recruitment isn’t just about scheme fit. It’s about trust and familiarity.

Jones’ older brother, Wayne Jones, played for the Wildcats from 2018 to 2021, giving Dawayne an inside look at the culture in Manhattan long before his own recruitment took off. That built-in connection has helped Kansas State stay firmly in the mix even as Power Five offers continue to roll in.

New defensive tackles coach Jordan Dove has also prioritized Jones early, maintaining consistent communication since the staff transition. Meanwhile, defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt remains central to the recruitment, as Jones made clear he values the opportunity to work closely with the position coach he’d be developing under daily.

Official visits often serve as momentum shifts in high-profile recruitments, and the June 5-7 trip could be pivotal. Getting Jones back on campus — around players, meetings, and summer workouts — gives the Wildcats a chance to move from “top contender” to potential leader.

Competitive Recruitment Heating Up

With 25 offers already to his name, Jones’ recruitment is far from over. Several regional and national programs are expected to receive official visits as well, and there is no indication he plans to rush a decision.

Still, Kansas State appears to have positioned itself well early in the process. Being in his reported top 12 as of late 2025 and re-extending an offer under the new staff in January shows continuity and intent.

Winning in-state and neighboring-state battles is often critical for programs looking to sustain success in the modern recruiting landscape. For Kansas State, landing a player like Jones — productive, versatile, and already connected to the program — would signal that the Klein era can recruit at a high level in the trenches.

For now, the Wildcats have done everything they can to stay near the top. June’s official visit may determine whether they can finish the job.
