FROM EARLY DOUBTS TO MARCH DOMINANCE: DUKE BLUE DEVILS READY TO PROVE THEY BELONG AMONG THE ELITE

The season for the Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball has been nothing short of a roller coaster — filled with early struggles, remarkable resilience, and a powerful surge that brought them back into the national spotlight. Now, as postseason play begins, the biggest question remains: can Duke sustain its momentum and prove it is truly one of the nation’s elite teams?
Just a few months ago, the Blue Devils’ season seemed to be slipping away. Entering the year ranked No. 7 nationally, expectations were high for a team loaded with returning talent and championship aspirations. However, the opening weeks of the season were brutal. Duke faced a demanding nonconference schedule that tested the team against some of the strongest programs in the country. The result was a string of painful losses that pushed the Blue Devils out of the rankings and left many wondering whether the preseason hype had been misplaced.
The early defeats were tough to swallow. Duke opened the season with a loss to Baylor Bears women’s basketball in Paris, followed by difficult matchups against powerhouse programs including South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball, UCLA Bruins women’s basketball, and LSU Tigers women’s basketball. Within a month, the Blue Devils were sitting at a disappointing 3–6 record and were no longer part of the national conversation.
For many teams, such a start could have destroyed confidence and fractured team chemistry. But for Duke, the adversity became a turning point.
According to star forward Toby Fournier, the struggles forced the team to take a hard look at itself and rediscover what truly makes a winning program. Instead of blaming each other or dwelling on mistakes, the Blue Devils chose unity.
“We learned that you can’t win by yourself,” Fournier said during the season. “There are always going to be hard moments, but it’s better when everyone stays connected and works through them together.”
That mindset shift sparked one of the most impressive turnarounds in college basketball this year. Beginning with a convincing road win over the Virginia Tech Hokies women’s basketball in early December, Duke began to rebuild its season piece by piece.
The team’s identity slowly took shape. Defense became their foundation, rebounding their strength, and teamwork their driving force. Under the leadership of head coach Kara Lawson, the Blue Devils rediscovered the discipline and intensity that have become hallmarks of her program.
The wins began to pile up.
Duke went on an incredible run, defeating 17 consecutive opponents and climbing back into the top 10 nationally. Along the way, the Blue Devils delivered statement victories that proved their resilience, including a dramatic one-point win over the Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball and a hard-fought rivalry victory against the North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball.
By mid-February, the narrative around Duke had completely changed. What once looked like a disappointing season had transformed into a championship campaign.
Even opposing coaches took notice. Wes Moore, head coach of the NC State Wolfpack women’s basketball, praised Duke after his team became another victim during the Blue Devils’ long winning streak. Moore compared Lawson’s team to the legendary teams once led by Pat Summitt at Tennessee Lady Volunteers women’s basketball — a compliment that speaks volumes about Duke’s style of play.
“They defend and they rebound,” Moore said. “Those are the trademarks of great championship teams.”
Duke’s rise has been even more impressive considering the challenges the roster faced this season. The team lost experienced players from last year’s Elite Eight squad, including veteran guard Reigan Richardson. Another key contributor, Oluchi Okananwa, transferred away, while reserve forward Emma Koabel missed the entire season due to a knee injury.
Despite those setbacks, Duke relied on a strong core of returning starters — including Ashlon Jackson, Taina Mair, Delaney Thomas, and Jadyn Donovan — to keep the team competitive. Meanwhile, Fournier emerged as the undisputed leader on the court, averaging nearly 18 points, more than eight rebounds, and over two blocks per game.
Perhaps most impressive is that Duke managed to navigate the demanding conference schedule with an extremely short bench. Injuries and roster changes forced Lawson to rely on just seven players for much of the season. Yet, instead of collapsing under the pressure, the Blue Devils thrived.
Their reward was historic.
Duke captured its first outright ACC regular-season title since 2013 — a major milestone for Lawson and a sign that the program has returned to national prominence. It marked the 13th conference championship in school history and reinforced the belief that Duke is once again a powerhouse in women’s college basketball.
Still, the season hasn’t been perfect. Two losses late in the regular season raised fresh questions about consistency just as the postseason approached. Those defeats reminded everyone that even the hottest teams can stumble when the stakes get higher.
Now, all eyes turn to the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament and the upcoming NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Blue Devils enter the conference tournament as the top seed, and their performance there could determine whether they secure a top-16 national seed and the chance to host early tournament games.
For Lawson, the mission remains clear: keep improving.
“In postseason basketball, everyone is more urgent,” Lawson explained. “Every team is playing for something. There’s still a lot for us to play for, and a lot of growth we can capture.”
As March Madness approaches, Duke stands at a crossroads. The Blue Devils have already proven they can overcome adversity, silence critics, and dominate opponents. But the true test is still ahead.
If their remarkable turnaround continues, Duke could very well turn this unpredictable season into a championship run — and cement itself among the best teams in the country.
