UNC basketball secures commitment from son of program legend

It’s an exciting day in Tar Heel Nation, but also a sad one. UNC travels to Durham for a 6:30 p.m., Saturday night rematch with archrival Duke.

On Friday afternoon, North Carolina learned the worst possible news, as superstar freshman Caleb Wilson suffered a season-ending broken thumb. Barring a surprise decision, Wilson is heading to the NBA, where he’s projected to be a lottery pick in the 2026 Draft.

On Friday, the Tar Heels also added to their 2026-27 roster, securing a commitment from class of 2026 guard Malloy Smith.

The younger son of former UNC standout guard Kenny Smith (1983-1987), Malloy is wrapping up his final year at Mater Dei High School. As of Saturday morning, Malloy Smith and his Monarchs teammates are gearing for a CIF regional semifinal matchup.

“I chose North Carolina because of how it felt like home, the coaches trust and belief in me and their future plans for me align with mine and how I feel they can get the best out of me,” Smith said via Rivals’ Joe Tipton. “I like to get my teammates involved and play fast to use my speed to my advantage. The fans can expect a lot of energy and exciting plays. I’m very honored to be able to be apart of this family and every time I put on the Tar Heel jersey, I will not take it for granted.”

Smith now gives UNC three 2026 commitments, joining 5-star guard Dylan Mingo and 5-star wing Maximo Adams. With Seth Trimble graduating after North Carolina’s season ends, the path to minutes for Smith next year is promising.
