For the No. 1-ranked Duke Blue Devils, however, the road to March Madness has suddenly become more challenging. A key injury has shaken the lineup, but the team’s determination to keep pushing forward remains stronger than ever.
Head coach Jon Scheyer announced Tuesday morning that starting point guard Caleb Foster suffered a fractured right foot during Duke’s 76–61 victory over rival North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball on Saturday. The injury means Foster will be out for the “foreseeable future,” dealing a tough blow to a team that has looked like one of the strongest contenders for the national championship.
Despite the setback, Scheyer made it clear that the program remains hopeful and determined. Foster underwent surgery on Sunday morning and has already begun the rehabilitation process. While the timeline for recovery remains uncertain, the coaching staff has not completely ruled out the possibility of a return this season. According to Scheyer, Duke would likely need to reach the NCAA Final Four for Foster to realistically have a chance of stepping back onto the court.
“We’ll do everything we possibly can with our mindset to continue to advance,” Scheyer said. “Our goal is to keep moving forward and put ourselves in a position where Caleb could potentially return.”
