For supporters of UNC, Duke, and NC State, this year began with that same electric anticipation.
But instead of glory, March delivered something far more painful: collapse, controversy, and crushing disappointment.
For UNC, the unraveling came first—and it was nothing short of devastating. The Tar Heels appeared firmly in control against VCU, holding a commanding 19-point lead deep into the second half. Their offense was fluid, their defense aggressive, and their confidence unmistakable. At 70–56 with just over seven minutes remaining, victory seemed inevitable.
Then everything fell apart.

The fallout was immediate and historic. Head coach Hubert Davis was dismissed, marking a major shift for the program. Then there was Duke, whose heartbreak came in the most dramatic fashion possible.

With just seconds remaining and a 72–70 lead, victory was within reach. All they needed to do was protect the ball and force a foul.
Instead, disaster struck.
UConn’s full-court pressure forced a critical turnover, flipping the script in an instant. Within seconds, the Huskies found an open look from well beyond the arc—and delivered. The deep three-pointer at the buzzer crushed Duke’s hopes, sending UConn forward and leaving the Blue Devils stunned.
It was a painful echo of the previous year, when Duke also let a strong position slip away in the closing moments of a major tournament game. For a program accustomed to composure and late-game execution, these repeated collapses raise difficult questions about finishing under pressure.
