CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Malloy Smith, a 6-foot-5 guard from Encino, Calif., has formally signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of North Carolina and play men’s basketball for the Tar Heels, solidifying his commitment to the program during the NCAA’s spring signing period.
Smith, a senior at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., is rated a three-star prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking and is listed as the No. 379 overall player in the Class of 2026. At Mater Dei, a perennial national prep powerhouse, Smith averaged 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while showcasing the versatility to play multiple positions. At 6-foot-5, he’s been praised for his athleticism, high motor, and ability to guard the one through three spots — and even filled in at center when his team needed it.
For Smith, the decision to become a Tar Heel extends one of the most recognizable family traditions in Chapel Hill. He is the son of Kenny Smith, the UNC great who starred for the Tar Heels from 1983-87 under Dean Smith. The elder Smith earned first-team All-America honors as a senior, helped lead UNC to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and went on to win two NBA titles with the Houston Rockets. He’s now an Emmy-winning studio analyst on TNT’s Inside the NBA.
The Carolina bloodline doesn’t stop there. Malloy’s older brother, K.J. Smith, also wore Carolina blue, playing three seasons for the Tar Heels as a walk-on guard from 2018-21. With Malloy’s signing, he becomes the third member of his immediate family to suit up for UNC.
Smith’s path to Chapel Hill accelerated quickly. He received an offer from former head coach Hubert Davis in February and visited campus on Feb. 28 for North Carolina’s 89-82 win over Virginia Tech. He announced his commitment on March 6 during ESPN’s _NBA Tip-Off_, with his father on set. Despite a coaching change to Michael Malone, Smith said his trust in the university never wavered.
“I trusted North Carolina to make the right decision and find the right coach,” Smith told _Inside Carolina_. “Coach Malone is going to be amazing and do a great job, I know it. I’m so excited to be there and be coached by him.”
Smith chose North Carolina over offers from Cal, Cal State Northridge, and Portland State. He joins fellow West Coast prospect Maximo Adams in UNC’s two-man 2026 high school recruiting class. Both are expected to enroll in Chapel Hill this June.
“I just feel like I’m excited to be a part of the Carolina family,” Smith said. “I’m not taking anything for granted, and I’m working hard to help keep this university what it is.” He is the son of Kenny Smith and Gwendolyn Osborne Smith.
