Transfer Portal Early Losers: Big Names, Big Swings, Bigger Questions

The 2026 men’s basketball transfer portal has been a string of swings and misses for high-major programs.

Kentucky coach Mark Pope was seen in recent days at a Maccabi Tel Aviv game in Israel on what appears to be a recruiting trip, as he continues to explore international talent options. Meanwhile, first-year LSU coach Will Wade — who currently has just one player committed for next season in former Kentucky forward Mouhamed Dioubate — is also reportedly in Europe, where he is actively working to identify and secure additional pieces to complete the Tigers’ roster rebuild.

The Wildcats landed a pair of high-profile, top-ranked lead guards in Zoom Diallo from Washington and Alex Wilkins from Furman, but questions are already surfacing about how the backcourt will ultimately come together. On paper, both players bring scoring punch and playmaking ability, giving Kentucky two dynamic options to initiate offense and attack off the dribble.

Wilkins, a true freshman last season, put up strong counting stats at Furman, averaging 17.8 points and 4.7 assists per game. However, his production came with notable inefficiencies, as he also averaged 3.8 turnovers per contest, ranking among the more turnover-prone guards nationally. That ball-security issue, combined with a heavy on-ball workload, underscores the adjustment he’ll need to make at the high-major level.

Diallo, meanwhile, profiles as another primary creator rather than a traditional off-ball guard, meaning both players are most comfortable with the ball in their hands. While that gives Kentucky flexibility in late-clock situations, it also raises natural questions about redundancy in skill sets and how possessions will be distributed.

Neither guard is viewed as a consistent outside shooting threat at this stage, which further complicates spacing. In modern college offenses, backcourts that lack perimeter shooting can struggle to fully unlock driving lanes and post touches, especially against elite defensive teams that can collapse the paint.

As a result, the pairing presents both upside and uncertainty: Kentucky has added two talented guards capable of generating offense in a variety of ways, but the fit between them — and the overall balance of the lineup around them — will likely be one of the key storylines heading into the season.
