UNC targets Florida center for frontcourt depth

The North Carolina Tar Heels continue their search for a center, hoping to add more depth to the roster in the frontcourt. And according to a new report, they have their eyes on a North Carolina native.

TarHeel247’s David Sisk reported on Monday that the Tar Heels have contacted Florida center Micah Handlogten in the transfer portal.

Handlogten, a 7-foot-1 senior from Southlake Christian Academy in Huntersville, North Carolina, is waiting for the NCAA to rule on a medical redshirt waiver that would give him one more season of eligibility. He fractured his leg in the 2024 SEC Tournament and initially planned to sit out the 2025 season. Instead, he gave up his redshirt with seven games left in the regular season and returned to the floor.

Handlogten played 199 minutes over 16 games from Feb. 15 to April 7 as the Gators made their run to a national championship.

This past season, he was a key depth piece for Florida, which won the SEC regular-season title and earned the No. 1 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Gators were upset in the round of 32 on a buzzer-beater loss to Iowa.

Handlogten appeared in 34 games and made two starts, averaging 4.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in 14.8 minutes. He played behind standout forward Reuben Chinyelu, the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, on a deep Florida front line. Over four seasons at Marshall and Florida, Handlogten averaged 5.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. He shot 64.6% from the field and 44.4% from the free-throw line.
