CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The North Carolina Tar Heels baseball delivered another statement performance on Sunday afternoon, completing a commanding three-game sweep of Pittsburgh Panthers baseball with a 7-3 victory at Boshamer Stadium. In front of an energized home crowd celebrating both Mother’s Day and Senior Day, the Diamond Heels combined disciplined offense, clutch pitching, and relentless execution to cap off one of their most complete weekends of the season.
The victory marked North Carolina’s first home sweep in ACC play this year and pushed the Tar Heels to an impressive 40-9-1 overall record while improving to 20-7 in conference action. More importantly, the series showcased a team that can win in multiple ways — from explosive power hitting to tactical small ball and lockdown mound work.
After flexing their power on Friday night and producing a balanced offensive attack on Saturday, the Tar Heels changed gears completely in Sunday’s finale. Head coach Scott Forbes watched his team manufacture runs through patience, execution, and smart situational baseball rather than relying on home runs or extra-base hits.
UNC laid down a season-high four sacrifice bunts and drew seven walks, constantly putting pressure on Pittsburgh’s defense. Every inning seemed to feature another productive at-bat, another runner advanced, or another moment where the Tar Heels simply out-executed their opponent. It was baseball at its most disciplined level.
The Tar Heels managed just one extra-base hit all afternoon — a first-inning double to right-center from Gavin Gallaher — but still produced seven runs through aggressive baserunning and timely contact hitting. Four of UNC’s seven runs came directly after sacrifice bunts successfully moved runners into scoring position, proving once again that championship-caliber teams must be capable of adapting their style to any situation.
Sunday’s win also highlighted the strength and depth of North Carolina’s pitching staff. Junior right-hander Folger Boaz made his first start since April 19 against Georgia Tech and delivered one of his strongest performances of the season. Pitching with confidence and attacking the strike zone, Boaz racked up a season-high eight strikeouts while keeping Pittsburgh hitters off balance throughout his outing.
The performance was especially meaningful considering it may have been his final regular-season appearance at Boshamer Stadium. Boaz came within one strikeout of matching the career high he previously set against Princeton during the 2024 season, and his command on Sunday gave the Tar Heels exactly the steady presence they needed early in the game.
Freshman pitcher Caden Glauber followed Friday night’s dominant showing with another strong relief appearance. Glauber allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings, continuing to demonstrate why he has quickly become one of the most trusted young arms on the roster. Although he battled command issues and issued a season-high five walks, he repeatedly found ways to escape danger and prevent Pittsburgh from generating momentum.
The defining moment of the game came in the top of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, two outs, and the Tar Heels holding a 6-2 lead, all the pressure shifted onto UNC’s bullpen. That’s when Walker McDuffie delivered the biggest pitch of the afternoon.
Making his third consecutive appearance, McDuffie stared down Pittsburgh catcher Sebastian Pisacreta in a tense full-count battle before unleashing a devastating slider for the inning-ending strikeout. The crowd erupted as the senior right-hander walked off the mound, effectively sealing the sweep and preserving another important ACC victory for North Carolina.
The weekend series reinforced why the Diamond Heels remain one of the nation’s most dangerous and complete teams entering the final stretch of the season. Their offense can overpower opponents with home runs, but Sunday proved they can also dominate through patience, execution, and intelligent baseball. On the mound, UNC continues to showcase impressive depth, with veterans and young contributors stepping up in key moments.
Beyond the statistics, the atmosphere inside Boshamer Stadium reflected a team playing with confidence, unity, and purpose. Senior Day celebrations added emotional weight to the afternoon, and the Tar Heels responded with the type of composed performance expected from a championship contender.
Now, North Carolina will quickly shift its focus to another important challenge as the Diamond Heels travel to face UNC Wilmington Seahawks baseball in a midweek showdown Tuesday night at Brooks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. as the Tar Heels continue building momentum toward postseason play.
With the ACC race heating up and postseason expectations growing stronger by the week, North Carolina appears to be peaking at exactly the right time. If this weekend’s performances proved anything, it is that the Diamond Heels possess the versatility, resilience, and depth necessary to compete with anyone in college baseball.
