Liverpool’s title hopes are rising. The Reds put in a superb performance in the Premier League on New Year’s Day with a 4-2 win over Newcastle United to move three points clear at the top of the table.

This was probably one of Liverpool’s most convincing performances in recent weeks. While some of the final moments were disappointing, it was a night that showed they are Manchester City’s closest rivals in the title race.

Some fans believe the new signings in the January transfer window will give Jurgen Klopp’s side the best chance of going all the way with parts of the pitch looking bright.

Centre-back is a position that could be strengthened after Joel Matip was ruled out this season and the Reds have been linked with the signing of Bayer Leverkusen boss Piero Hincapy.

The midfielder was overhauled last summer due to major issues with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, but Fulham’s Joao Palhinha appears to be a target for Liverpool if Klopp feels the need to introduce an open defensive midfielder.

According to new transfer claims, the Merseysiders appear to be looking for a player who can shine in both of the aforementioned positions.

The Japanese international was once described by former Schalke coach Dimitrios Grammosis as “a player with remarkable composure”.

He represented his country three times at the 2022 World Cup and his composure really shone through in his passing ability.

Ikatura has had to join Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool’s first-choice centre-back Ibrahim Konate as a squad player, but he has been outstanding this season and is truly one of the best passers around. Of all the centre-backs in EuropeAt 26, the Mönchengladbach hero is old.

Although he has been playing at a high level for many years, he has yet to reach the highest level. Wataru Endo will have an international opponent at Anfield who can help him adapt quickly. Itakura also has the added bonus of being able to play in defensive midfield when needed, and Klopp could see this versatility as a key asset.
