Liverpool loanee vindicated for Sheffield Wednesday tackle as Hull City suspension is revoked

 

Hull City’s player red card has been overturned  against Sheffield Wednesday this week.

Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton, who has impressed during his loan spell with the Tigers this season, was shown a straight red card by  Jaydy Gassama.

Referee Darren Bond waved the score at 0-0 in the 35th minute, but Wednesday was at his best early on.

The red flag for serious misconduct led to an automatic three-match ban for the teenager, but it was confirmed on Thursday morning that the ban had been completely overturned on appeal.

The EFL said in a statement: “Hull City’s Tyler Morton has successfully challenged his unfair dismissal and will be able to play in the next three games.”

The midfielder was sent off for a foul during the Premier League match against Sheffield Wednesday on Monday, January 1, 2024.

After the game, it was revealed that Hull would appeal the decision, with manager Liam Rosenior telling the media after the game: “It’s not a red card.

I think everyone on the court knows that Darren has a tough job and from his perspective it looks like Tyler is in the lead but if you watch the replays you see that’s not the case and that’s the call.

Because I don’t think any player deserves to miss three games. that. I spoke to Darren and he is a great referee.

“Everybody makes mistakes, but I make mistakes too. “I wanted to send 4,000 fans home happy but the result was changed to a red card to be able to play, so it’s frustrating and disappointing.”

The Morton incident is the second time in three games that an opposing club has challenged a red card after Coventry City tried to overturn Bambo Diaby’s post-match ban. The Sky Blues fell short and Kitching received a three-match ban with two games remaining.
