Liverpool are planning to sign PSV winger Johan Bakayoko this year, according to Fichajes. The report claims that Liverpool view the winger as a “promising option” as they look to strengthen their squad at the end of the season.
Bakayoko has impressed for PSV Eindhoven this season, scoring four goals and providing 13 assists in all competitions.
Transfermarkt values him at £34m, but it remains to be seen how much PSV will demand for his signature.
He could be a good long-term signing for Liverpool. A January move looks unlikely and it’s reasonable to assume Liverpool will have to wait until the summer transfer window to get a deal done.
PSV are unlikely to approve a mid-season move for their main striker. Meanwhile, Liverpool have other priorities in January. They will have to try to sign a centre-back with Joel Matip out for the rest of the season.
That means they could use another extreme. Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz are currently the club’s only specialist midfielders, and Liverpool need more depth in this area.
Bakayoko is a right winger who adds creativity, pace, flair and goals to Liverpool’s attack. With the 20-year-old’s coaching and experience behind him, he could progress and become a key player for Liverpool next season if he joins the club.
A run for Bakayoko?
It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can win the race to sign him. Especially with teams like Manchester United targeting the striker.
We have previously discussed reports that the Reds are in need of reinforcements from wider areas and have identified Belgium as a long-term option.
Liverpool recently signed Cody Gakpo from PSV and the two clubs have a friendly contract. They could use that relationship to pry Red from Bakayoko this summer.
