Ruben Amorim’s side are now almost halfway up the table thanks to the Scandinavian striker’s outstanding form. Victor Joqueres has scored 20 goals and assisted 10 in all competitions for Sporting this season. The Swede, who moved to Portugal from Coventry City this summer for around $26 million, caught the eye and immediately established himself at the highest level. “Doqueres is breaking records at Sporting and I can honestly say he is better than me,” said Manuel Fernandez, the 72-year-old sporting legend who scored 241 goals in his A Bola career.
“I haven’t seen a complete striker like him since he left Sporting. “They are equal players, but are there better players? No, he is a complete player. He scores and scores. This quality is very important for a striker. “I hope he doesn’t leave Sporting any time soon.”
Liverpool have made frequent purchases in the Portuguese market, with Luis Diaz (FC Porto) and Darwin Núñez (Benfica) both coming to Anfield from the region thanks to Julian Ward’s knowledge and experience. Fabio Carvalho also represents Portugal but has left Fulham on the international stage. Former sporting director Ward left at the end of last season, but Liverpool have now been told they will have to make another move, this time to Sporting CP, for the player who performed at the highest level in Portugal.
