Arne Slot has confirmed that contract talks remain ongoing between Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool. The Reds captain’s current deal expires next summer, along with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The trio’s futures remain the subject of ongoing speculation as a result, with all three free to agree pre-contract agreements with overseas clubs from January. However, Van Dijk revealed last month that contract talks had been opened between the club and his representatives.
Speaking ahead of his side’s home clash with Brighton, Slot conceded that while his captain’s Anfield future remains uncertain as things stand, he remains unconcerned by the situation.
Not from my side,” he said when asked if there was any new update on the soon-to-be out-of-contract trio. “For me, the contract situation could become a problem if the players don’t perform well as they do at the moment.
Although, of course then it’s also not sure that if they perform not as well anymore, that that has anything to do with their contract situation.
“At the moment, all three of them are in a good place. They all perform really, really, really well.
“There are ongoing discussions between what Virgil said, the people he had to talk with. And that’s not me, as you know. I talk to him about other things.
Let’s wait and see. But I think all that he says is completely right as he doesn’t exactly know what his future brings as long as he hasn’t signed the contract.”
