Liverpool have won seven consecutive matches in all competitions after beating Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

In one of the most anticipated clashes of the season, the Reds extended their lead at the top to nine points after a deserved win against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is elated with the position the Reds are in, but he is not getting carried away.

With so many games left to be played, it is highly possible that the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea or City can pick their form and gradually close the gap.

After the match, Slot said that nobody, including himself, predicted that Liverpool would be in this position.

Once again, the Dutch boss has praised his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, for giving him a great team to work with.

He said, as quoted by BBC Sport: “I don’t think anyone, including me, would have predicted this [start]. I knew Jurgen [Klopp] left the team in a very good place.

“But still, to win so much with all the difficult teams we have played already is not something you could predict at the start of the season.”

He did not make any major changes to the squad in the summer, and basically, he is playing with the same team as last season.

What he did was to make certain changes to the system.

Phil McNulty of BBC Sport nailed it perfectly as he notes that the current Liverpool side is the “perfect mix and match of Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal football then the calmer symphonies of his successor Arne Slot.”

This means Liverpool still retains the high-octane pressing traits they inherited from Klopp, but they take a calmer approach in their build-up, and that is why they have an outstanding defensive record so far.
