Backcourt Boost: Temple Lands Electric Guard Derrian Ford in Transfer from Arkansas State
The Temple Owls are making serious moves in the offseason, and the latest addition to their roster is a major one. Arkansas State transfer and former four-star prospect Derrian Ford has officially committed to Temple, bolstering the Owls’ backcourt with elite athleticism, scoring ability, and leadership as they look to contend in the American Athletic Conference.
Ford, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound guard, averaged 15.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game last season for Arkansas State. Known for his explosiveness off the dribble and smooth shooting stroke, Ford quickly became one of the most sought-after guards in the transfer portal after announcing his intention to leave the Red Wolves. His decision to join Temple sends a strong message that head coach Adam Fisher is serious about building a championship-caliber team in Philadelphia.
“Derrian is a proven scorer and a high-character young man who brings toughness and leadership,” Fisher said in a statement. “He’s exactly the kind of player we want wearing a Temple jersey — talented, driven, and unselfish.”
Ford originally committed to Arkansas after a standout high school career in Magnolia, Arkansas, where he won two state championships and earned the title of Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year. After limited playing time with the Razorbacks, he transferred to Arkansas State, where he flourished in a larger role. Now, he’s taking the next step in his career by joining a Temple team hungry for a return to national relevance.
“This was a basketball decision, but also a personal one,” Ford said in a social media post announcing his commitment. “Temple felt like home. Coach Fisher believes in me and my game, and I’m ready to work. Let’s get to it, Philly.”
Ford is expected to compete immediately for a starting role and will bring much-needed experience to a young Owls squad. His versatility as a combo guard will allow Fisher flexibility in rotations, and his ability to create offense both for himself and others could be a game-changer in close contests.
The Owls are coming off a rebuilding season, but the addition of Ford — alongside a promising freshman class and other returning talent — is sure to spark optimism among fans and analysts alike. With AAC competition heating up, Temple now finds itself armed with a battle-tested guard ready to lead the charge.
Expectations will rise, and all eyes will be on Derrian Ford when he takes the court in a Temple uniform. If his track record is any indication, the Owls may have found their new star.
