Beloved Former UK Basketball Guard Larry Johnson Passes Away — Remembered as a Fierce Competitor on the Court and a Gentle, Inspiring Soul Off It by Teammates Like Kyle Macy
The University of Kentucky basketball community is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished former players. Larry Johnson, a standout guard for the Wildcats in the late 1970s, has passed away. He was more than just a talented athlete—he was a man whose kindness, smile, and spirit left a lasting imprint on those who knew him.
The news was shared with deep emotion by former UK star Kyle Macy, who played alongside Johnson during his redshirt year. In a heartfelt tribute, Macy wrote:
“I was just informed that former UK basketball guard Larry Johnson has passed away. He was not only an outstanding basketball player, but even a better person with a kind heart, contagious smile and welcoming disposition. I know I became a much better player by playing against him every day in practice my redshirt year. RIP Larry!”
A Wildcat Legacy
Larry Johnson, a native of Morganfield, Kentucky, wore the blue and white with pride from 1976 to 1979. Known for his sharp instincts, smooth ball handling, and tenacious defense, Johnson was a key contributor during a pivotal era in Kentucky basketball. His leadership and consistency helped solidify the program’s reputation as a national powerhouse.
But while his on-court skills drew the spotlight, those who played with him—and against him—say it was his off-court presence that truly made him unforgettable.
“Larry had a quiet strength about him,” said former teammate James Lee. “He led by example. You always knew he had your back, whether in a game or in life.”
A Teammate’s Testimony
Kyle Macy, who transferred to Kentucky in 1977 after a stellar freshman year at Purdue, spent his redshirt season practicing with the team but not playing in games. It was during those intense practices that he encountered Johnson’s impact firsthand.
“Going up against Larry every day made me a tougher player, mentally and physically,” Macy said. “But what I’ll never forget is how he treated me—not as some transfer trying to fit in, but as a brother. He had that effect on everyone.”
Kindness That Reached Beyond Basketball
Johnson’s kindness extended far beyond the hardwood. Former classmates and fans alike remember a man who always made time to smile, shake hands, and listen. He was deeply involved in community outreach throughout his life, often volunteering at youth basketball camps and mentoring aspiring athletes across the state.
“He never let the fame of Kentucky basketball change him,” said longtime fan and Lexington resident Cheryl Banks. “He always had time for people, and he made you feel seen.”
A Life Remembered
Though Johnson may not have become a household name in the professional ranks, his legacy at Kentucky remains enduring. He is remembered not just for his contributions to the scoreboard, but for the integrity, humility, and heart he brought to the program.
The University of Kentucky Athletic Department is expected to release an official statement and may hold a tribute in his honor during the upcoming basketball season.
As tributes continue to pour in from former teammates, coaches, and fans, one thing is clear: Larry Johnson was a Wildcat through and through—and his legacy of sportsmanship, friendship, and quiet excellence will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his family, including children and grandchildren, who continue to carry on his spirit of kindness and
resilience.
May he rest in peace.
