In a recent episode of his “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger” podcast, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger expressed concerns about the team’s steadfast adherence to traditional strategies. He emphasized the necessity for the Steelers to adapt to modern NFL dynamics, stating, “There’s definitely truth to it. You’ve got to change with the times.”
Roethlisberger highlighted the team’s tendency to rely on their inherent talent without incorporating innovative tactics. He remarked, “It’s like we just go through this, ‘eh, we’re just better than you. We’re gonna line up, and we’re gonna beat you.’ That works to a certain extent. At some point, you have to decide that you’re gonna throw some different wrinkles at teams.”
He also pointed out the contrast between the Steelers’ approach and that of other teams known for their strategic unpredictability. Citing a recent game, Roethlisberger noted, “Look at the end of that Bills-Chiefs game. [Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo] sent a corner blitz. They sent it for the first time all game, in a situation where you would never expect it and you need it, and they got home.”
These comments from Roethlisberger, who spent 18 seasons with the Steelers, come amid ongoing discussions about the organization’s reluctance to expand its coaching staff and invest in broader support roles. He previously implied that financial considerations might be hindering such developments, stating, “Expand the strength and conditioning staff; expand the training staff. Expand equipment staff, all that stuff. But that’s money. And we all know that the Rooneys aren’t putting a lot of extra into that stuff.”
Roethlisberger’s insights shed light on the internal challenges the Steelers face as they navigate the evolving landscape of the NFL. His perspective underscores the importance of adaptability and innovation in maintaining competitiveness in the league.
