The Duke Blue Devils have been widely regarded as the favorite to win the national championship, under the leadership of head coach Jon Scheyer.
Duke entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the East region after winning the ACC regular-season and ACC Tournament championship.
Amid the Blue Devils’ success, the ACC posted some exciting news on Scheyer.
Duke’s head coach has been listed as a finalist for the Naismith Trophy, given to college basketball’s Coach of the Year.
Upon the release of the news, the ACC sent a message about Scheyer. “Best of the best,” the ACC’s official social media account posted. “ACC Championship Head Coach, Jon Scheyer, is a Naismith Trophy Coach of the Year finalist!”The Blue Devils began the NCAA Tournament with a commanding 93-49 win over Mount St. Mary’s. They followed that with an 89-66 victory over the Baylor Bears.
Duke has been led by former No. 1 overall recruit and Player of the Year finalist Cooper Flagg. So far this season, the freshman has averaged 18.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
Scheyer took over the Blue Devils’ program after Mike Krzyzewski, arguably the greatest coach in college basketball history, retired. He’s been the head coach at Duke since 2022 after serving as the associate head coach from 2018 to 2022 and an assistant coach from 2014 to 2018.
