Cincinnati Bengals Sign Veteran Guard Lucas Patrick to One-Year Deal

Cincinnati Bengals Sign Veteran Guard Lucas Patrick to One-Year Deal

The Cincinnati Bengals have officially signed free-agent offensive guard Lucas Patrick to a one-year contract, bringing veteran experience and depth to their offensive line. Patrick, who has previously started 64 games for the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints, is expected to play a key role in protecting quarterback Joe Burrow and stabilizing the Bengals’ interior offensive line.

A Veteran Presence on the Offensive Line

Lucas Patrick, 30, has built a solid career in the NFL since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Duke University in 2016. He initially joined the Green Bay Packers, where he spent five seasons (2017-2021) and became a reliable starter. Over his time in Green Bay, he demonstrated versatility, playing both guard and center, making him a valuable asset to any offensive line.

Patrick moved on to the Chicago Bears in 2022, where injuries limited his impact, but he still provided leadership and experience to a developing unit. In 2024, he had a short stint with the New Orleans Saints, starting in key games and further proving his ability to adapt to different offensive schemes.

Now, as he joins the Bengals, Patrick will look to bring his wealth of experience and toughness to an offensive line that has been under scrutiny in recent years for its inconsistency in protecting Joe Burrow.

Impact on the Bengals’ Offensive Line

The Bengals have made it a priority to improve their offensive line after seeing Joe Burrow endure multiple injuries due to poor pass protection. Despite making key signings in previous years, including left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. and center Ted Karras, the unit still struggled at times to provide consistent blocking, especially against elite defensive fronts.

Patrick’s signing gives the Bengals a veteran presence who can compete for a starting spot at either guard position. He also provides valuable depth as a center, which could be crucial if injuries arise during the season. His ability to play multiple positions along the interior line makes him a valuable chess piece for offensive line coach Frank Pollack.

A Tough, Gritty Player

One of Patrick’s defining traits is his toughness. Throughout his career, he has been known as a physical, no-nonsense lineman who plays with a chip on his shoulder. His work ethic and leadership qualities have been praised by coaches and teammates alike.

In Green Bay, he was a trusted protector for Aaron Rodgers, and in Chicago, despite injuries limiting his availability, he was viewed as a leader in the locker room. That type of mentality will be important for a Bengals team looking to make another deep playoff run in the AFC.

What This Means for the Bengals Moving Forward

With Patrick now in the mix, the Bengals have bolstered their offensive line depth heading into the 2025 season. While he may not be a guaranteed starter, he will certainly push for playing time in training camp and could become a key contributor depending on how the competition plays out.

Cincinnati has been focused on protecting Burrow at all costs, and adding a veteran like Patrick signals their commitment to ensuring their franchise quarterback has the protection he needs. Whether as a starter or a reliable backup, Patrick’s presence strengthens the Bengals’ offensive line and provides the team with a proven veteran who knows what it takes to win in the NFL.

As the Bengals prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how Patrick integrates into the offensive line and what role he ultimately plays in their pursuit of an AFC championship.
