Coach With a Cause: Jon Scheyer Converts Home Into Youth Shelter With $3.9M Investment

In a powerful and deeply personal gesture that transcends the game of basketball, Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer has committed $3.9 million of his own money to convert a private residence in Durham into a youth shelter for homeless and at-risk teens. The decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving a local teen, which prompted Scheyer to take meaningful action.

The new shelter, to be named “The Blue Haven”, will serve as a safe space for destitute youth in the Duke community, providing not only food and shelter but also access to mental health support, education resources, and mentorship programs—many of which will be led by current and former Duke athletes.

From Tragedy to Transformation

Sources close to Scheyer revealed that the decision was sparked by a recent incident in downtown Durham, where a 17-year-old unhoused teen lost his life after exposure to extreme weather conditions. The tragedy deeply affected the coach, who has long been an advocate for youth empowerment through education and sports.

“We can’t just preach brotherhood and compassion on the court,” Scheyer said in a statement on Sunday. “We have to live it off the court too. That young man could have been one of our own. This is about making sure others like him have somewhere to go, somewhere to feel safe and valued.”

Set to open by the end of the year, The Blue Haven will house up to 25 residents at a time, ranging from ages 14 to 19. The facility will provide:

  1. On-site counseling and trauma support
  2. Tutoring and GED preparation
  3. Job training and placement assistance
  4. Mentorship from Duke student-athletes and alumni

The $3.9 million investment includes renovation of the property, staffing for the first two years, and a scholarship fund for residents who wish to pursue college or vocational training. Scheyer worked closely with Durham city officials, nonprofits, and Duke University leadership to ensure the shelter aligns with both community needs and long-term sustainability goals.

The initiative has already drawn overwhelming support from the Duke community. Former Duke star Zion Williamson called the move “incredible,” and Coach K, Scheyer’s predecessor and mentor, said he was “immensely proud” of what the current head coach is building—both on and off the court.

“This is leadership in its highest form,” Coach K said in a written tribute. “Jon’s heart for this community is evident, and this effort will impact lives far beyond basketball.”
